GIS Internship/Lab Experience

Water Resource Specialist Intern, DHS Maine Drinking Water Program, Augusta, Maine, Summer 2003

·         Using ArcView 8.3 and 3.2 to build a GIS of public drinking water wells throughout the state of Maine

·         Visited 113 schools, campsites, restaurants, and recreation areas to GPS (using Trimble Explorer) the drinking water well and note type of well, as well as geographic features surrounding wells, such as plant growth, housing, proximity to roads, and presence of standing water

·         Used ArcInfo to create watershed maps for public municipalities

 

GIS Lab Assistant, UMF Department of Geography, Farmington, Maine, May 2003-Present

·         Assist Dr. Cathleen McAnneny, associate professor of geography, with teaching the lab section of GEO 204, Geographic Techniques, and GEO 304, Advanced Geographic Techniques

·         Hold 10 office hours in the lab weekly to assist students outside of class with remote sensing lab work 

·         Maintain 16 computer workstations in the UMF Geography Lab, installing and updating ActiveSync/Pathfinder (link to Trimble downloads) and ArcView 8.3, as well as adding devices to the network, such as printers, scanners, and computers

·         Serve as liaison to UMF Computer Center in reporting and resolving problems related to hardware, software, and networking

·         Troubleshoot the Digitizer, reinstalling software as necessary

 

GIS Field Experience

GIS Specialist, Rangeley Land Trust, Rangeley, Maine, Nov. 2003

·         Built a GIS map of the Sandy River Watershed, using ArcView 8.3

 

GIS Specialist, Missing Link Snowmobile Club, New Sharon, Maine, February 2003

·         Used Trimble to take GPS points and lines of 80 miles of maintained snowmobile trails in Franklin County.

·         Created maps of snowmobile trail network for the club and eventual submission to the state for grant funding using ArcView 8.3,

·         Overlaid the GIS map on a 7.5-minute Quad of New Sharon, Starks, Farmington, and Industry, Maine

Work Experience

Maintenance Worker, Narrow Gauge Cinemas, Farmington, Maine, July 2003-Present

·         Responsible for cleaning, maintenance, painting, and light carpentry within a seven-screen, independent movie theater.

 

Selective Woodcutter, Private Landowner, Clearwater Lake, Industry, Maine, Summer 2002

·         Used chainsaws, handsaws, wedges, and axes to selectively cut five acres in preparation for residential construction.

·         Cut and felled trees in accordance with shorefront regulations. Erected barriers to prevent construction runoff from reaching the lake.

 

Volunteer Activities

Member, Wilton Historical Society, Wilton, Maine, Summer 2003-Present

·         Attend meetings and help schedule community activities to raise awareness and appreciation of the town’s heritage

·         Convert Society’s hard-copy documentation into PC files for secure archiving

 

Woodland Wanderers Snowmobile Club, Wilton, Maine, 1994-Present

·         Responsible for grooming and trail maintenance of a nine-mile section of ITS-82. Participate in club social activities, such as group rides and pot-luck suppers.
