Praxis I Exam Information for UMF Students

The Praxis I-PPST (Pre Professional Skills Test) measures competency in reading, mathematics, and writing associated with content and skills typically mastered in the junior year of high school. The Praxis I-PPST is offered as both a computer-based test (CBT) and paper-and-pencil test, and you may choose to take either format. The number of questions and time length of the two formats differ slightly. See "Section Profile" in the drop-down menu above.

In Maine, the computer-based test (CBT) may be taken by appointment at Prometric Testing Centers in Bangor (207-947-1234) or South Portland (207-775-5812). Simply call the Prometric Center of choice to register for an available session. See "CBT Centers Nationwide" link in the drop-down menu above for other computer-based test sites in the United States. The UMF Center for Human Development offers the paper-and-pencil version of the Praxis I-PPST at various times throughout the year. See "Test Dates at UMF" link in the drop-down menu above for test dates and registration deadlines.

Passage of the Praxis I-PPST is required for Maine Teacher Certification. Students majoring in teacher certification programs at UMF must achieve a passing composite score on the three sections (reading, mathematics, and writing) of the Praxis I-PPST to be eligible for student teaching in the senior year. Students majoring in teacher certification programs at UMF must pass the Praxis I-PPST -- generally by or during the sophomore year -- to be eligible for Professional Standing within their programs. Students seeking to transfer into teacher certification majors at UMF must pass the Praxis I-PPST to be considered for acceptance. See "Requirements for..." links in the drop-down menu above for more information.

►The Maine Dept. of Education and UMF require a passing composite score for the Reading, Writing, and Mathematics sections of either the CBT or paper-and-pencil version of the Praxis I-PPST. A composite score of 526 is passing provided that the scores on the individual sections are not three points lower from the following: Reading--176, Writing--175, Math--175. See "State-by-State Praxis Requirements" link in the drop-down menu above for other states' passing scores.

►Each of the three portions of the Praxis I-PPST costs $35 plus a $40 registration fee. Taking all three sections at once, which is recommended for first-time test takers, costs $145. Re-taking an individual portion of the test will cost $75 -- $35 for the individual portion plus the $40 registration fee.

A link to online registration is available within the drop-down menu above. Three codes are necessary in order for Praxis I-PPST scores to be sent to UMF and the Maine Dept. of Education. The online registration form asks for an "attending institution code" relating to the student's school. That code is R3506. The online registration form also asks for "recipient codes" to indicate where Praxis should send score reports. UMF students should indicate R3506 for UMF and R7368 for the Maine Dept. of Education.
