Counseling Resources

Individual Counseling
Students most often meet weekly with the counselor for a 50-minute session, though during a particularly stressful period the student and counselor might meet more frequently. Many students find they can resolve their issues within one to five counseling sessions and find counseling an extremely helpful resource in making it through a semester. Others like having an ongoing relationship with a counselor over time and return periodically for support throughout their college years.

Group Counseling
Groups provide an experience of interacting meaningfully with others in a supportive environment. Counseling groups may be arranged around a specific issue or topic and vary from semester to semester. Please contact the CHD for group listings, or if you would like to see a particular group started.

Workshops/Class Presentations
Possible topics for workshops/class presentations include assertiveness, stress management, relaxation techniques, college blues, alcohol/drug abuse, and eating disorders.

Other Services
Clinical counselors at the CHD are available to consult with UMF staff and faculty, and can provide conflict mediation services to students, staff, and faculty. Clinical counselors also can provide referrals to area therapists and mental health facilities.

Resource Library
The clinical counseling staff offers a small library of self-help books that may be loaned for extended use.
